Bread Bangkok – A French Coffee Shop & Restaurant

If you’ve got a hunger for some real bread, then come here!
My wife and I went for lunch here last week and I’ve got to say, it was a real treat. Only a stones through away from Pleonchit BTS station at the top of Soi Ruamrudee. Its easily as good as that sandwich shop next to the fountain in Vientiane. If you’ve ever been on a visa run there then you should know the one I mean.

If there’s one thing I crave out here, its a proper sandwich. It’s become more common now to find than it was five years ago but until now my favourite place to go has been the Food Court in Central Chidlom. Bread definitely tops it.
The Fresh Princess and I went there for lunch last Saturday after I was invited to the grand opening last Friday and we were both very impressed.
Lunch started with a few glasses of Ricard (Pernod) at only 34bt a glass. That’s gotta be the cheapest/strongest drink in Thailand apart from lao khao.

This was great because 1. The wife didn’t even know this stuff was alcoholic and 2. I fancied a few lunch time drinks without getting moaned at.
They have a lunch special on but both of us decided to go straight for the sandwiches.
I had the Sandwich Rilette which was served with fresh pickles and the wife went for the Sandwich Smoked Salmon with goats cheese, red onion and capers. Both were served on French Bread.
We did a halfsy halfsy with each other so we could get a taste for both and they were so big that I managed to get even more by finishing hers off. Delicious.
I washed this down with a few more glasses of Ricard.

You’ve gotta love that. I’d never really tried it before and even though I work in the industry I’ve never known how to serve it until now. A shot of Ricard over ice in a small carafe topped up with water. Not to every ones taste but I like it.
Then we both went outside to sit in the shade on the very nicely decked out patio so that I could smoke and we decided to have creme brulee for desert. They’re going to have Pan O’ Chocolate on the menu soon which is one of my favourites.
I washed this down with a few glasses of Ricard.
The owners who are mates of mine came out to join us and it made for a great afternoon. I was a bit gutted because I forgot to try the quiche lorraine which was one of the reasons that I was going there in the first place, but I soon forgot about it after a few more glasses of Ricard. (No I don’t work for Ricard but at 34bt lets get pissed!)
This is the first of what they plan to be many around town and its also their ‘Test Lab’ where they’re going to try out all their new dishes. The bill came to about 600bt which was great as I was completely sloshed.
I was particularly impressed by the way that all the Thai staff were completely fluent in French just like me! And by completely fluent I mean they all greeted us with a very nice Bonjour.
If you’re in the area or even just passing on the skytrain and feeling a bit peckish, I’d recommend popping in for a sandwich coz they’re great. And I know my sangers!
